Laudrup could not repeat his debut season success with Al Rayyan

On June of 2014, Michael Laudrup was confirmed as the new manager of the Qatar Stars League club Lekhwiya and despite it being the debut season of Laudrup as the coach, the Danish manager was still able to guide the team to huge success as Lekhwiya emerged as the champions of the Qatar Stars League and they also lifted the Crown Prince Cup.

It was a very successful debut season of Michael Laudrup as the head coach of Lekhwiya as he lifted 2 major Qatar based pieces of silverware.

Despite going through such an impressive period of time in charge of the Qatar Star League club Lekhwiya, Michael Laudrup did not opt to sign a contract extension and instead he decided to take charge of Al Rayyan.

On October of 2016, it was announced that Michael Laudrup had become the coach of Al Rayyan and even though it was a fairly impressive debut season for Laudrup, he failed to lift any piece of silverware.

During the 2016-17 season, Al Rayyan finished in the 3rd spot which is a significant drop from the previous season where they emerged as the champions.

In the AFC Champions League, Al Rayyan sustained a defeat against Al Hilal which eliminated Michael Laudrup’s team from the competition.

The piece of silverware that Al Rayyan came closest on winning with Laudrup at the helm was the 2017 edition of the Emir Cup were they managed to reach the finals but ultimately lost to Al-Sadd in a match that showed a final scoreboard of 2-1 in favor of Al-Sadd.

Even though Michael Laudrup failed to replicate his debut season success that he went through with Lekhwiya and repeat it with Al Rayyan, the Danish manager is still expected to continue in charge of the Qatar based club as his initial contract extends for 1 more year and Laudrup is eager to start lifting titles at the helm of Al Rayyan.
